Halloween; Playground Meeting 10/20; Goodbye Chief Towers

Halloween.

Residents have been asking me whether Halloween is on this year. It is — but take precautions. The Cheverly Parents’ Resource Center (CPRC) provided some guidance (flyer immediately below). There are also other planned events, also below.

Cheverly says… Welcome Trick-or-Treaters, Sunday, October 31, 6pm-8pm. General Tips: Look for Halloween costumes that are bright and reflective and made of flame resistant material. Accompany young children and review traffic safety, 911 protocols, and general safety tips with older trick-or-treaters. CONTINUE TO FOLLOW COVID-19 GUIDELINES IF YOU PLAN TO TRICK-OR-TREAT: Wear a face mask or covering. Continue to practice social distancing and avoid large groups and crowds. Bring hand sanitizer and use often. Wash hands before eating any candy. Consider alternative ways to celebrate: Have a scavenger candy hunt with your immediate family. Carving pumpkins. Host a virtual costume party with friends. Watch your favorite Halloween movie. PLEASE TURN YOUR PORCH LIGHT ON IF YOU WISH TO PARTICIPATE and turn your porch lights off if you do NOT wish to participate. We’re open for boo-ness! Visit https://www.princegeorgescountymd.gov/1769/Halloween-Safety-Rules for county safety tips.

Other Halloween activities:

  • Haunted Hike, organized by the Boy Scouts, 10/23 (weekend before Halloween), Woodworth Trail, entrance behind town hall. Shout-out to Ward 2 CM Micah Watson for his work with the Boy Scouts.

  • Bonfire event for teens, 10/30, parking lot of the Cheverly United Methodist Church (CUMC), organized by PCAB and Cheverly CERT in concert with CUMC. Shout-out to Ward 1 CM Marverly Nettles in helping organize the event.

  • Cheverly Police Trunk-or-Treat — 10/31. Police will be present to ensure Halloween stays both safe and fun. Police cars will be at the corner of Cheverly Avenue and Forest Road; officers will hand out candy to trick-or-treaters.

Woodworth Park Playground Meeting, 10/20, 7 pm.

Woodworth Park playground, at the corner of Wayne Place and Cheverly Park Drive, is being redesigned with input from residents. The contractor, Playground Specialists Inc., has been working with us, with Cheverly Public Works Director Steve Brayman as liaison.

We have had two meetings so far, and alternative designs have been drafted based on the contractors’ expertise and resident input provided at both meetings. Each of the designs have elements that are inclusive for children with disabilities. At this next meeting the goal is to come to a decision on what the town wants. (Edit December 5: pardon the ambitious wishful thinking on my part, regarding the timeline. Final options were presented and discussed at the December 2 worksession. Also I hadn’t conveyed earlier that the renovations to the park are dedicated to a child with a disability who resided in Cheverly but who has passed away.)

  • Notice about the meeting with links, on the town website.

  • Sign up to get information, Zoom links, etc.

  • Please take the survey to tell the contractors what the town wants for the park — survey page includes pictures of each design. Some information that was covered at the meetings, that may not be obvious from the pictures:

    • In the first design, the equipment in the middle with the round platform and yellow handles is an accessible whirl (links to catalogue with photo) — sort of like a kid-powered merry-go-round. It does need a push to get started (either like a skateboard or someone outside giving it a push), but kids can take turns spinning on it. And it is wheelchair accessible.

    • In the second design, the large blue equipment accessible by ramp is called an Aero Glider (launches video that shows kids playing on it and how the glider moves). And it is wheelchair accessible.

    • In both the second and third designs, the round blue balls are Cozy Cocoon spinners (launches video of kids playing in one). They spin, and are also friendly for kids who like to be on the playground but who may need respite from overstimulation.

Goodbye Chief Towers

On Sunday afternoon, 10/17, we held a goodbye party for our former Police Chief, Jarod Towers, who now is the Chief of Police in Hyattsville. While we were sad to see him go, we also were grateful for his service to Cheverly, his forward thinking, and responsiveness. Our neighbors in Hyattsville are lucky to have him!
